When did you last feel untethered? Somewhere deep in the Romanian Carpathians, beyond the last reliable road and the last flicker of phone signal, the world narrows to the creak of leather saddles, the rhythmic thud of hooves in wet earth, and the peculiar comfort of getting lost on horseback beneath a bruised summer sky. Rain drifts lazily through the valleys, not violent, not cold enough to matter, just enough to wake the smell of pine bark, soaked hay and chimney smoke leaking from forgotten villages stitched into the mountains like relics from another century. You ride slowly here because the mountains insist on it. Horses know these roads better than maps ever could, threading through muddy lanes where old women still stack wood by hand and shepherd dogs watch strangers with biblical suspicion. One village appears through the fog with crooked fences and painted windows, another hides behind folds of emerald hills where church bells dissolve into the rain.
