I took a course called survival Japanese for 8 months on my phone using an app called speak! And was able to pretty much navigate conversations! I highly reccomend :)

currently in japan, tested and bought things from 7/11 and lawsons, was never asked for a bag, or asked how id like to pay, they have machines that do that now and they just scan the item and you pay through machine, you get ice cups specifically for coffees (not solo ice cups no more) and they point you wear the machine is (they charge you for ice coffee but you don't have to use it for such)
