I asked Imagineering how the free roaming Olaf works, and, surprisingly, they revealed a lot. Time to debunk some big misconceptions about the viral star of the World of Frozen at Disney Adventure World and the future of these robots in the parks. Disney's new Olaf animatronic can walk, balance, and emote just like he stepped out of the movie. And he's can do all of that on a moving, rocking, rotating boat. I flew to France to see him in person, and then I interviewed Moritz Bächer, the Lab Director of Disney's Robotics Division in Zurich to find out how Imagineering actually pulled this off. I went into my interview with Moritz wanting to learn how one robot works. What I learned changed how I think about the future of robotic characters in Disney's parks.
