On 12 July 1998, less than two hours before the FIFA World Cup Final between France and Brazil, Yves Saint Laurent transformed the Stade de France into the stage for one of the most ambitious fashion presentations ever conceived. Created to celebrate the house's 40th anniversary, the 15-minute spectacle brought together 300 archival looks, 300 models and a production team of 900 people before a live audience of 80,000 spectators and a global television audience estimated at 1.7 billion. Pierre Bergé famously described the event as "the entrance of the eternal feminine in the temple of man." The statement captured the symbolism of the occasion. At the heart of football's most prestigious arena, haute couture entered a space traditionally defined by masculine competition, transforming a sporting monument into a celebration of creativity, elegance and French cultural influence. The pitch itself became a vast runway painted like an open sky, where a giant red YSL monogram emerged at the centre of the stadium. Under the direction of Olivier Massard, the models moved across the field in a carefully orchestrated choreography set to a dramatic reinterpretation of Ravel's Boléro, creating an atmosphere that felt both ceremonial and cinematic. Rather than presenting a new collection, Saint Laurent looked backwards to move fashion forward. Drawn from 174 collections, the retrospective traced four decades of innovation through Le Smoking, Sahariennes, masculine tailoring, Ballets Russes fantasies and extraordinary couture creations rich with embroidery, silk, feathers and colour. The presentation united some of the defining faces of the 1990s, including Carla Bruni, Laetitia Casta, Jodie Kidd, Katoucha and Adriana Sklenarikova. What made the show revolutionary was not only its scale but its audience. Long before livestreams, celebrity spectacles and destination fashion events became industry standards, Saint Laurent understood the power of mass communication. #ysl #saintlaurent #worldcup1998 #model #stadedefrance
