He founded the Cynic school of philosophy and chose to live in extreme poverty — famously residing in a large ceramic jar (barrel) in the streets of Athens. Diogenes rejected all social norms, material possessions, and conventions. He mocked kings, philosophers, and ordinary citizens alike for their hypocrisy and vanity.
