@lucaonthego: Are you overpaying for your ryokan experience in Japan? 👀♨️ Because honestly… you might be. A lot of travelers book the first luxury ryokan they see in places like Kyoto, spend €400–700 a night, and assume that’s the “normal” price for the experience. It’s not. 🇯🇵 A ryokan is a traditional Japanese inn, usually including: • tatami rooms • futons • onsen access • yukata • and often breakfast + kaiseki dinner But here’s what many people don’t realize: 💡 The location changes the price more than the experience itself. A ryokan in tourist-heavy areas can cost double or triple compared to equally beautiful stays in regions like: • Gunma Prefecture • Kyushu • Wakayama prefecture • smaller onsen towns across Japan 🍱 And yes, meals matter too. Many expensive ryokans include elaborate kaiseki dinners, private baths, or premium rooms, but if you mainly care about the atmosphere and onsen culture, you absolutely don’t need to spend a fortune. ⚠️ Another thing: Some cheaper ryokans are older and more traditional → meaning shared bathrooms, stricter schedules, thinner walls, and fewer “luxury hotel” comforts. The trick is understanding what you actually want from the experience. Because the best ryokan stays aren’t always the most expensive ones. Sometimes they’re just the ones in the right place ✨ #travel #japan #japantravel #traveltips #ryokan

i often find ryokans expensive and I like to have my own bathroom, thats why i love the dormy kyoritsu hotels. it gives the authentic feeling with private onsens. in Hakone i will be staying two nights at dormy and two nights in an small old geisha house with a small onsen.

We just booked our hotels for Tokyo and Lake Kawaguchi. We're looking to visit a ryokan for 1/2 nights and plan to go to Kyoto, Osaka and Okinawa after. Do you have any suggestions where to look for? As you've said don't book it in Kyoto.
