Historian and Archaeologist here, one of our skeleton's from a previous Highdown Hill (near Worthing, West Sussex) dig's DNA showed that her great-great-grandma was from Ethiopia. And the skeleton is about 1500 years old.

What texts do you think should be on the curriculum to help our kids have a full cultural understanding?! What books can I recommend for extra reading ? Thank you for your content! (With love, an English teacher) x

Britain has had numerous, influential Black inventors, scientists, and engineers who have helped shape modern technology, medicine, and research. It's one whole history and should be taught that way not separated. We all walk this life together.

This is fascinating! I’m a queer historian in York, and had no idea Septimus Severus was of African descent. Today is now a deep dive day! 💜

“Black Tudors” is a great book, I was lucky enough to win a signed copy in a painting competition and it’s such a good read, definitely recommend it

In 1805 John Kent was born in my home county, Cumbria. His father was a former slave. John became the first black police officer in the UK, first serving in Maryport in 1835 then returned to Carlisle in 1837 to continue his service in the police before being dismissed in 1844. His portrait still displays on the wall of Cumbria constabulary HQ. I learned that in school back in the early 80’s with my teacher telling us it was important for us to know. Also my daughter would love that book, I’ll have to go get it.

Hi Claire, Thank you for the work you’re doing. My Nanna often spoke about Britain’s indigenous people and a “second migration” she believed included people from the Kongo. Though she was very white, she always reminded me that my ancestors were black. As I got older, I found traces of what she described and began writing books and music inspired by these forgotten histories. I think your work is brilliant, and more people should explore these conversations. Many people in Britain likely have distant black ancestry despite appearing completely white today, showing how much history and identity have changed over time. There’s something powerful about reconnecting with those lost stories and remembering who we are beneath the labels history gave us.

I really wish more British students were able to access Black British history!! I work at an archive and the number of students who are absolutely shocked by our photos and records of Black students from the 1950s because they only learn American history is really staggering. It would be amazing to have a Local History module included in most History undergraduate courses and this should of course include local Black history 🤎

My Great Grandfather was in England in the late 1890s. He was a mixed Jamaican/Scottish man. He met my British Great Grandmother in London, in a workhouse. He took her back to Jamaica where they married and had kids.

💯 🙌 Can we just make it normal to incorporate black history into all our history. It’s the history of our lands and those who inhabited it. 🙏🙏🏾🙏🏻🙏🏿🙏🏽🙏🏼
