@sunlightsunbright4: Mr. Robot (Season 1, Episode 1: eps1.0_hellofriend.mov) Summary & Full Cast Elliot Alderson, a young cyber-security engineer by day and vigilante hacker by night, is recruited by a mysterious insurrectionist known as "Mr. Robot" to join a group of hacktivists called "fsociety." Their goal is to take down the massive conglomerate E Corp (which Elliot calls "Evil Corp") by erasing all consumer debt. Rami Malek (Elliot Alderson) Christian Slater (Mr. Robot) Portia Doubleday (Angela Moss) Carly Chaikin (Darlene) Martin Wallström (Tyrell Wellick) Michel Gill (Gideon Goddard) Gloria Reuben (Krista Gordon) Ben Rappaport (Ollie Parker) Aaron Takahashi (Lloyd Chung) Director Information Sam Esmail created, wrote, and directed the pilot (and eventually every episode of the later seasons). A visionary Egyptian-American filmmaker, Esmail is known for his distinct visual language—using "short-siding" (placing characters at the edge of the frame) to show isolation. He is also the creator of Homecoming and directed the 2023 film Leave the World Behind. 10 Fun Facts & Behind the Scenes The Lead: Rami Malek was almost overlooked for the role until Sam Esmail’s partner, Emmy Rossum, suggested him after seeing his work in The Pacific. Real Hacking: Unlike most Hollywood tech shows, the code seen on screen is 100% real and accurate to what actual hackers would use. Internal Dialogue: The "Hello friend" monologue was written to give the audience a sense of being Elliot's "imaginary friend," a unique narrative device. Slater’s Casting: Christian Slater was cast because he naturally embodies the "unreliable mentor" energy popular in 90s cult classics like Fight Club. The Hoodie: Elliot's black hoodie was actually Rami Malek's own personal hoodie that he wore to the audition; the costume department eventually made several copies of it. Setting the Scene: The scene at the "all-night" diner (Ron's Coffee) was filmed at a real location in Manhattan called "Think Coffee." The Music: Mac Quayle composed the synth-heavy score, which was inspired by 80s electronic music to mirror Elliot's digital world. Subtle Clues: Sam Esmail hid "Easter eggs" in the backgrounds of the pilot that foreshadow twists that wouldn't happen until Season 4. Casting Darlene: Carly Chaikin originally auditioned for the role of Angela, but Esmail felt her "tough-girl" energy was perfect for the chaotic Darlene. The Title: Every episode title in the series is formatted like a pirated video file or a piece of computer code (e.g., ".mov", ".php"). Soundtrack: Season 1, Episode 1 "New Sensation" by INXS (Played during the intro sequence) "If You Could Read My Mind" by Neil Young (Cover of Gordon Lightfoot, played during Elliot's monologue) "Steal My Sunshine" by LEN (Played at the party Elliot avoids) "Open" by Com Truise (Atmospheric electronic music during hacking scenes) "Downtime" by Mac Quayle (Part of the original electronic score) Release Date: June 24, 2015 Hashtags: #MrRobot #HelloFriend #RamiMalek #fsociety #CyberSecurity Parental Caution ⚠️: Rated TV-MA for drug use, strong language, and disturbing themes. Production: The pilot was shot in New York City on a modest cable budget (approx. $2–3 million for the pilot), emphasizing practical locations over soundstages. Fun Facts & Behind the Scenes: 1. The hacking shown in the series is technically accurate and consulted on by real security experts. 2. Rami Malek’s performance led to his first Emmy win before his Oscar. 3. One famous Season 3 episode was filmed to appear as one continuous, unbroken shot. 4. Many "fsociety" videos were inspired by the real hacker group Anonymous. 5. The show originally began as a screenplay for a feature film.
