@glass.box.diaries: Harlequin Vs Lambchop Rasbora Comparison: Find The Best Tropical Fish For Your Aquarium! Thinking about adding rasboras to your planted aquarium? Here’s a quick comparison between two of my favourite nano schooling fish: Harlequin Rasbora and Lambchop Rasbora. Both species are peaceful, beginner-friendly, hardy, and look incredible in planted tanks, but there are some important differences that can help you decide which one is best for your setup. Harlequin Rasboras are the larger species, with a deeper body shape, bigger black triangle marking, and more of a pink-bronze colouration. Lambchop Rasboras stay noticeably smaller and slimmer, with thinner black markings and much brighter orange tones that really stand out under aquarium lighting. One of the biggest deciding factors is aquarium size. Lambchop Rasboras are much better suited to smaller tanks, with around 54 litres or 14 US gallons being a great starting point. Harlequin Rasboras need more swimming space due to their larger size, and I’d personally recommend at least 110 litres or 29 US gallons for a proper group. Both species prefer very similar water parameters: • Temperature: 23–28°C / 73–82°F • pH: 5.5–7.5 • Hardness: 1–10 dGH Their behaviour is surprisingly different too. Lambchop Rasboras tend to shoal tightly far more often, while Harlequins seem to group together more randomly throughout the day. Both species are active open-water swimmers and look amazing in heavily planted aquariums with darker substrates and floating plants. In my experience, both are extremely hardy and beginner friendly. I’d probably give Lambchops a slight edge overall because they seem a little less overbred and underrated in the hobby. That said, Harlequin Rasboras are far easier to find in most aquarium stores. Honestly, I think both species deserve way more attention in the fishkeeping hobby. If I could only keep one, I’d probably choose Lambchops — but it’s very close.
