A common question is asked: "If Imam Hussain (A.S.) was martyred in Karbala, why don't we simply call him a martyr?" The answer is simple: we do call him a martyr, but Karbala was not an ordinary battle and Imam Hussain (A.S.) was not an ordinary martyr. A martyr is someone who sacrifices his life for a cause. But Imam Hussain (A.S.) sacrificed everything for the survival of Islam itself. A six-month-old infant was killed. The family of the Prophet ﷺ was left thirsty. The women and children were taken captive. Seventy-two stood against thousands. Truth stood against falsehood. That is why, along with being a martyr, Imam Hussain (A.S.) is remembered as the Mazloom of Karbala — the oppressed one. The Qur'an permits raising one's voice against ظلم (oppression) when one has been wronged. Karbala was not merely a battlefield. It was the ultimate example of standing against injustice, regardless of the cost.
