TCP vs UDP vs QUIC ⚡ They all move data across networks, but the way they handle connections, reliability, latency, and packet loss is completely different. TCP is reliable and connection-oriented. A new connection requires a handshake, and TCP with TLS 1.3 typically needs 2 round trips before application data can flow. The tradeoff? Head-of-line blocking—lose one packet, and later data may have to wait. UDP is the lightweight option. Its header is just 8 bytes, with no handshake, acknowledgments, retransmissions, or ordering guarantees. Perfect when speed matters more than recovering every packet—think DNS, voice, and live streaming. Then there’s QUIC. QUIC runs over UDP but adds reliability, congestion control, encryption, and multiple independent streams. A new QUIC connection can typically start in 1 RTT, while resumed connections can use 0-RTT. The biggest advantage? If one stream loses a packet, other streams can continue instead of waiting behind it.
