I have a theory. Because many Black Americans live in a first world country, some may feel superior to Africans due to the stereotypes that Africa is poor and underdeveloped. When Tyla became successful, proudly represented South Africa, and didn't fit those stereotypes, some people wanted to claim her as one of their own.When she identified as Coloured a valid identity in South Africa they refused to accept her explanation and instead tried to tell her how she should identify. It's ironic because they criticized others for imposing identities, yet they were doing the same to her. If that was really about unity, why weren't Ayra Starr, Tems, or Shenseea treated the same way?
