Most people read Genesis 1:2 and move straight to the first day of creation. But the Hebrew word translated hovering — rachaf — stops everything. It does not mean suspended in authority or waiting in power. It means brooding. The same word Deuteronomy 32 uses for an eagle spreading its wings over its young. Watching. Protecting. Present over something that cannot yet sustain itself. The first image of the Holy Spirit in all of Scripture is not a rushing wind or a consuming fire. It is a parent hovering over something unformed and vulnerable — before a single creative word has been spoken. This is what the Spirit does before things come to life. He does not arrive after the word. He is already there before it. Brooding over the void. Hovering over the unformed. I love that part where you says “ in darkness” I take it like if a Christian are in their rock bottom or wilderness and maybe in the dark part of that season of their life. The Holy Spirit is your comforter through that darkness and Jesus is your light in your feet to take one step at a time.
