@alifeafterlayoff: Tell me about yourself isn’t a filler or ice breaker interview question. It sets the tone for the rest of your interview. #jobinterviewtips #interviewprep #interviewtips #careeradvice

It’s such a bad question. Be more specific. Do you want to know my skills? Hobbies? Experience? There are way too many directions you could go with that question

I hate the interview process. it's slows things down so much. fortunately there are jobs out there that pay well and don't require answers to these bullshit questions.

“Tell me about yourself” me: “can you clarify the context and parameters within which i should formulate my answer?” You: “what a wierdo”

It’s these games that make work so insufferable. Just ask me directly. This is all a power trip and people can see through it

Can we stop speaking in code and just ask the questions you want your answers to?

As a recruiter this comment section is great feedback. I love hearing candidates share what’s working and what’s not. Clearly this is not the way to go, it’s an old tired system that doesn’t get us to the right candidate - people are learning to be “robotic” and play games back. If we want authenticity, and to find great fits, we have to change the approach!

I get it, I play the game but it’s hilarious how so much of interviewing is a game that really shows who’s good at interviewing for jobs not who’s good at the job.

"Please give me a very specific answer to a very vague question. Even though you've already provided all the information needed during the application, resume and reference check. Realistically, my role here is actually quite useless."

What if you’re actually really good at the job but not great at this? Some of the best people I’ve hired didn’t interview well. But my gut told me they “got it.”

I cannot wait until a major shift happens and we are over these ridiculous questions and the silent expectations of answers. I’m so tired of it.

I treat interviews like dates. I would never ask a general question like this to a date. its such a lazy question.

This job market is brutal. I didn't get passed along from a phone screening because of this question. I interviewed to be a store manager of a hardware store. I come from fashion retail and my most recent job history was consultative boutiques not big box. So I knew going in I really wanted to highlight about myself was my past experience in high volume operations & leading product-knowledgable team. I had a prepared elevator pitch on it ready for the "Tell me about yourself" question. She interrupts me in the second half saying they don't prioritize product knowledge because their customers are already so "knowledgeable." Talks about looking for a "people-first" manager because they're a "people-first company" (with below average employee satisfaction ratings on glassdoor but sure) No problem. I pivot away from talking about my operational teeth, focusing on my leadership methodologies and proven success stories that backup the people-leadership piece. I still didn't get passed along & I truly believe that was due to the impression she got from me within the first 15 seconds despite us spending the entire rest of the interview discussing what she actually prioritized. Like nothing we talked about after that first 15 seconds was going to matter or make a difference. She already had made a decision.

How about recruiters stop wasting my time and ask clear questions that relate to the role, my experience, and what I can bring to the table that will benefit the company instead of a psychological chess game?

Job interviewing needs a major overhaul. Completely vague question but expecting a detailed specific answer.

Why does it feel like Recruiters are trained to ask questions by the same person that teaches politicians how to answer them? Ask the question you want an answer too. The fact that so many people get on here and try to teach people how to answer recruiter questions is kind of indicative that recruiters aren't clear with the questions they ask.
