Wanting mutual respect is reasonable. The issue is when people use “respect your elders” to excuse being rude, controlling, dismissive, or mean just because they’re older. Respect those who respect you. Regardless of age.

Disrespecting someone just because they disrespected you is problematic because it validates their poor behavior, escalates the conflict, and sacrifices your own integrity. It creates a toxic cycle where both parties stoop to a lower standard of communication, ultimately eroding mutual trust and your own peace of mind.
