Mainstream Story: Kuafu Chases the Sun In Chinese mythology, Kuafu was a giant and the leader of the Kuafu clan. He challenged the sun to a race, determined to catch it. Kuafu ran with incredible speed, but the heat made him unbearably thirsty. He first drank the Yellow River and the Wei River dry, yet his thirst remained. He then headed toward the Great Marsh in the north to drink, but died of thirst on the way. After Kuafu’s death, his staff fell to the ground and turned into a vast peach forest known as Denglin. This version highlights Kuafu’s heroic spirit and his bold challenge against nature. He ultimately dies from exhaustion and thirst—there is no involvement of Yinglong in this account. Alternate Version: Yinglong Kills Kuafu Another myth states that after Yinglong— the winged dragon who assisted the Yellow Emperor—killed Chiyou, he also killed Kuafu. Due to the immense strain of battle, Yinglong was unable to return to the heavens and instead remained in the southern regions, which was used to explain why the south receives abundant rainfall. •	Kuafu is often depicted as a giant hero or a tribal leader from either the northern or southern regions. In some mythological systems, he is viewed as an ally of Chiyou (and thus an opponent of the Yellow Emperor). •	Following the great war between the Yellow Emperor and Chiyou, Yinglong as the Yellow Emperor’s divine war-beast continued eliminating remnants of Chiyou’s faction. Kuafu, either due to his solar-chasing act (seen as disturbing celestial order) or his tribal allegiance, was considered a threat and slain. •	This narrative reinforces Yinglong as a fierce war-dragon: not only bringing rain or controlling waters, but also eliminating powerful adversaries. Both death motifs—dying of thirst and being killed—coexist in different traditions.
