something I'm curious about that my therapist brought up was the effect of marijuana or benzodiazepines on memory reconsolidation. we were specifically talking about post intense IFS session trying to abstain as long as possible from using those to support memory reconsolidation

So I’m in coherence therapy and have been for about a year and a half. How do I know it’s working? I do get emotional/emote in session and feel like my therapist can provide the mismatch by being a safe space and super attuned. But sometimes I feel like I’m not progressing

I’m a DID client. I’m guessing with dissociated parts it’s most effective if the dissociated part that holds the emotional learning is present for both the activation of the emotional learning and the mismatch experience? This would explain why successful reconsolidation done in some parts of the system doesn’t always reach all parts?

I had and still kind of have some really bad memory experiences related to emotional neglect and so far the only thing that I found that helped me was Rapid Resolution Therapy (RRT) mixed with somatic movement, my mind loved the visual aspect of RRT and the Somatics helped discharge things, would that be related to memory reconsolidation?

Do you have a specific training or organization you recommend to introduce therapists to the idea of memory reconsolidation as an intervention?

Hmm, it’s interesting hearing cognitive therapy framed as ineffective here, because what you’re describing sounds very similar to expectancy violation and inhibitory learning models used in behavioral therapies like exposure therapy.

I’ve been following you for a while, and even taken a couple trainings, where I get stuck is with the mismatched experience. I struggle with some clients to find or help them find the mismatch experience. So the memory reconsolidation is hard to come by.

Thank you for this. I thought I’d read or heard that recovering traumatic memories (maybe not quite the same thing as memory reconsolidation) was not that important to therapeutic outcome. (Not a therapist.) I was having trouble squaring that with my experience of being healed by traumatic memory recovery through psychedelics.

my ifs therapist (doing EMDR in two weeks, been working together for months) understands the science of memory reconsolidation. what is your opinion on smoking weed/eating edibles on days when therapy could prompt memory consolidation? I know thc affects memory and dreams just don't understand the neuroscience of how it may impact this process. I'm listening to my therapist I'm just curious your thoughts.

My favorite is somatic experiencing for this! And then the other modality that was very helpful for me, especially for a very pre-verbal trauma was EMDR

Also can the mismatch simply be my therapist responding in a validating and attuned way? And now things feel more safe for me? (Maybe I am progressing lol)

Okay, wow, you just said a mouthful. Where can I read an article or book about what you just said? I need to get what you are saying about memory consolidation being the key element of therapy firmly in my head, and I'd also like to read the empirical research that underlies that. It makes sense, and I believe you, but I want to read about it.
