@drbeckyatgoodinside: Earlier this year at the World Economic Forum I heard this line multiple times: “AI will take away menial tasks so humans can connect and be creative.” People nodded. But I can’t stop thinking about how linear that assumption is, as if human connection and creativity are guaranteed outputs - like they just happen once we clear the schedule. Here’s how I see it: connection and creativity aren’t just “what’s left over” when we get more efficient. They’re skills we build over time through real-life experience: handling frustration, sitting with hard feelings, trying again when things don’t work right away, being bored, working through conflict, repairing after mistakes, and learning how to be with people who won’t always understand us perfectly. I recently shared more about my thoughts on AI and child development and I also shared I’m not anti-tech, anti-progress, or anti-productivity. I happen to love all those things. It’s just that I am also pro-childhood, and I’m pro-human development. If we build a world that requires less and less from children emotionally, the result will be less human connection, less creativity, and a whole host of other problems too. We have to figure out a way to preserve some of the friction in children’s lives, not erase it.

Why are people using it to replace the creative jobs? Photo editing, advertising/graphic design, script writing, copy writing, etc.

People think AI will help people connect? Has any technology in the past 25 years helped us connect? No, it's made it worse.

Humans need humans even more! I agree completely, story telling, human connection and showing them the thinking parts out loud. Being in the imperfection is the main thing!

If we take away the “menial tasks” that people do for work, how are they going to afford to enjoy the life they will apparently then have time for?

AI has become a total joke at this point in the narrative. It’s just conversational search or interactive task crunching.

The beauty I saw in life was people’s ability to create. For me, turn tech into something tangible, take a beautiful picture, build something from raw materials, build an image, etc.
I always felt comfort in knowing my ability to create.
I never thought there would be a day where the machines I loved and I always saw as way to be productive turn into something that takes away all the beauty I saw in life.

What they mean is we’ll have more time for human interaction and creativity while we’re unemployed, after laying us off because they think AI can do our jobs.

The book Player Piano by Kurt Vonnegut does an excellent job of exploring this concept even though it was published in 1952 - so ahead of its time!

This is a great perspective 👏 growth happens through friction and adversity. Being able to tolerate frustration is a necessary skill for that.
