Hot meals were often cooked behind the lines and carried forward in containers; by 1918 the U.S. Army used mobile field kitchens, and hot rations like stew and coffee could be drawn in large cans. But when front-line supply failed, soldiers relied on reserve rations: canned meat, hard bread, coffee, sugar, and salt.
