I always find that once you get a job have a 2 minute think about it, start to finish. Don’t just jump in and start cutting steel. If possible grab your drawing, a pencil, calculator and blank piece of paper. Head off to a quiet space and do up a cutting list. 9times out of 10 you will find an error somewhere that someone has missed and it will make your live 💯 easier to change a drawing then to start cutting welded steel apart. It will also help you map out the job in your head and give you a better plan of attack rather than fake it until you make it.

tip, start your welds about 15mm from the beginning and quickly step back and run the weld as normal, will help with cold start.

Protect your eyes and ears cause they will be the first to fade out , keep a clean lens on your helmet so that you're not adjusting your tint lighter and causing long term eye damage.

Don't stay in the same fabrication shop, move around to gather more knowledge and experience.

It's a tuff trade but it is/was something I luvd to do..
I also heard if you rub vicks vapour rub under your eye it helps elevate arc eye, makes them watery and not sandy.

Hey Sweet I was always taught to start with the darkest shade welding lense 13 if possible .. so as you get older you can use a slightly lighter shade been welding since I was 17 am 54 now and the dark lense is too dark for me now I have use an 11.. The longer you can persist using a dark lense the better .

I found that one of the best things for me was to have "movement breaks". plan your day out, space out your heavy lifting, and move around/stretch as much as possible. getting stuck in an awkward position for long periods is a oneway road to a short lived career and years of pain.

My mentor has welded for like 30 years the BEST and yet simplest bit of advice he gave me was always be comfortable when you weld. Now I can do any position all cuz of his advice it’s simple but it’s true

if you can adjust the work height of the job to suit yourself . if it's a repeating process getting comfortable is important. good footwear that allows you to stay on your feet and you will be surprised how many places use movable floor mats on concrete to help with fatigue. get your blood test done for kidney and liver function and be careful using sports drinks or Electrolyte drinks too much as they can damage your kidneys. fume extraction is easier now then ever before and should be used when you can use it

Today, at 55 years old, I am nursing a really bad case of welding flesh. I have done it to myself so I can't blame anybody else. I would rate eye protection as the most important thing that you can do in the industry.
