![Originating in Ga-Sekhukhune, Limpopo, Mapanta grew out of sacred Bapedi ceremonies into one of South Africa’s most intense DIY sound system cultures. The sound caught global ears when @bjorktv dropped pioneer Serokolo 7 [@kgoxiserokolo] in her Venice Biennale DJ set. Last month, we visited Ga-Sekhukhune during the traditional June initiation period: a month-long mountain retreat where young people learn ancestral wisdom and proverbs. At night, heavy electronic bass meets spiritual chanting as dance crews stomp straight through the earth in hypnotic dances until sunrise.
