Just triple what you currently pay for yourself and thats the ballpark.

I think that you or his mother will need to be on the title of this "car" as he's underage... That will also enable either of you on said title to add him to your respective insurance... There needs to be an insurable interest... Many companies have discounts if they're a "good student"... but yeah, insurance companies need to know year, make, model, safety features etc...

FL resident here. My teenager is a newly licensed driver and I bought her a new car (Nissan) in my name and added her as a named driver and all that happened was that my total insurance (for both cars) increased by $115 monthly to include her as driver.

get the quote to add a car on your policy. then ask how much it would be to add a 16-year-old driver onto the policy as an extra driver. maybe they see it as separate pieces?

Okay, so this one I can answer. I did this with 3 kids. You can get a quote without him having the car first but you do need to pick a "representative car" with VIN and all info. If your insurance company has a local office it might behoove you to go into the office and speak to the agent versus calling on the phone. if the permit in California is the same as it is in most states, the number will be the same when he gets his license. if not an agent in person should be able to help you get a generalized quote. The problem is nowadays they just have a software system that they plug things into and they have to have all the criteria before they can do that. But speaking to someone across the desk should be able to give you a ballpark figure. For info, When my youngest got insurance on my policy 8 years ago it more than doubled my premium.

Don’t add him to the insurance. If he has permission to drive the car, the car is covered. Add the car, not the driver.

Insurance costs are based on the car, where you live exactly (not just state), and then driver experience and what types of insurance you want. It’s not as straight forward as you’d hope. It will be expensive even for a “cheap car”. I have 16 & 17yr olds. We pay more than the car is officially worth (2006 acura)

Ummm if you’re using an insurance broker, they should be able to get you a list of generalized ballpark quotes for his age and car make/model!? WTH!? It’s literally THEIR JOB!?

Either way it will cost 2 - 4 times what you are paying now if you add him to your policy.

Most carriers will quote the policy using the permit number, the teen’s name/date of birth, or they may temporarily list them as a permitted driver until the license is issued. California requires insurance coverage for permit drivers as well.
