As the railways expanded across Britain in the 19th century, ordinary people suddenly found themselves able to travel further than ever before. Places like Beeston Castle were transformed into popular day-trip destinations, with trains bringing crowds out into the countryside to enjoy history, fresh air, music, festivals, and community celebrations. Annual festivals began to be held around the castle grounds, turning this ancient medieval fortress into a lively social space filled with visitors. What fascinates me is how familiar it all feels. Over 100 years later, people still travel there for events, walks, scenery, and days out with family and friends. Technology changes, fashion changes, but people remain surprisingly similar.
