#japan #japanesefolklore #folklore #legend #fyp Kuchisake-onna (口裂け女; 'Slit-Mouthed Woman') is a malevolent figure in Japanese urban legends and folklore. Described as the malicious spirit, or onryō, of a woman, she partially covers her face with a mask or other item to hide her scar and carries a pair of scissors, a knife, or some other sharp object. She is most often described as a tall woman of about 175–180 cm (or 5’7-5’9 ft); however, some people believe she is up to 243.84 cm (or 8ft) tall, having long straight black hair, white hands, pale skin, and otherwise being considered beautiful (except for her scar). She has been described as a contemporary yōkai. According to popular legend, she asks potential victims if they think she is beautiful. If they respond with "no," she will either kill them with her long medical scissors on the spot or wait until nightfall and murder them in their sleep. If they say "yes," she will reveal that the corners of her mouth are slit from ear to ear, and she will then repeat her question. If the individual responds with "no," she will kill them with her weapon, and if they say "yes" hesitantly, she will cut the corners of their mouth in such a way that resembles her own disfigurement. Methods that can be used to survive an encounter with Kuchisake-onna include answering her question by describing her appearance as "average." The Kuchisake-onna legend has been described as dating back to the 17th to 19th centuries, during Japan's Edo period. The modern story of Kuchisake-onna originates from 1978 but only became popular in the summer of 1979, when several newspapers and magazines reported on the legend, and rumors surrounding it spread throughout the country, leading to young children being accompanied by groups of adults while walking home from school. Kuchisake-onna ("Slit-Mouthed Woman") is a famous Japanese urban legend and yōkai (folklore spirit) about a malevolent woman who asks targets a specific question before attacking. She walks at night wearing a surgical mask or cloth covering her face. She approaches travelers and asks, "Watashi, kirei?" ("Am I pretty?").If you say no, she attacks immediately. If you say yes, she removes her mask to reveal her mouth slit ear-to-ear and asks, "Kono mama demo?" ("Even like this?"). Saying no leads to an attack; saying yes causes her to cut the victim's mouth to resemble hers.According to urban folklore, you can escape by: Answering with non-committal phrases like "You look average" or "So-so," which confuses her long enough to run away. Throwing hard candy or bekko ame (tortoiseshell candy), which she stops to pick up. Mentioning pomade (hair wax), a word rumored to repel her. The legend gained massive popularity in Japan during the late 1970s, causing widespread panic among schoolchildren before spreading globally through pop culture, movies, and horror stories. The backstory of the Kuchisake-onna varies across different retellings, but the most popular origin stories explain how she became a vengeful spirit (onryō): The Samurai's Wife (Edo/Heian Period Legend): The most famous backstory claims she was an extraordinarily beautiful but vain woman married to a samurai. In a fit of rage after suspecting or discovering her infidelity, the samurai mutilated her by slitting her mouth from ear to ear, asking: "Who will think you are beautiful now?" After dying, her spirit returned to torment people with the same question. The Medical/Cosmetic Surgery Mishap: A more modern version suggests she was a woman whose face was accidentally disfigured during a plastic surgery or dental procedure gone wrong, leading her to seek vengeance out of grief and rage. Jealous Mutilation: Another popular urban variant attributes her disfigurement to an attack by a jealous rival or relative—often a sister—who was envious of her stunning looks.
