@annaxmarii: as embarrassing as it is, admitting your faults and shortcomings is the first step towards improvement. So here I am, laying it all out, honestly, so I can start trying to do better. I’ve spent the past year trying to form good habits, and while I’ve certainly come a really long way, I’m still not where I’d like to be. One of the best things we can do for ourselves is to never settle as we are, always strive to be the best we can be💕 (did you find the 🦈??) #cleaning #CleanTok #messyhouse #howtoclean #cleaningtips

I didn’t grow up in a tidy house. So I wanted that for myself. I intentionally live minimalistic to keep from my house being messy. Most people aren’t organized. I have adhd and the best gift I had myself was hiring an organizer. That changed my life.

My schedule is 30 mins at 8pm every night or every second night in the most commonly used areas like the Toilets, quick mop with flash spray mop. Wipe down kitchen counters and vacuum. At the weekends I do a deep clean 7-9 on Saturday or Sunday, like clean the stove, wash the trash cans Things like windows and ovens/fridges microwaves can be done once a month.

As someone who grew up in a messy cluttered house that was never taught to clean. I came realize that theres daily cleaning and deep cleaning. Daily cleaning is making beds, washing dishes, doing laundry, clearing surfaces and clearing the floors. Deep cleaning is focusing on that one specific area. Scrubbing toilets and tub, cleaning refrigerator, Scrubbing microwaves, declutter and reorganizing closets stuff like that. I always struggle with deep cleaning but I can do daily cleaning every single day by setting a ten minute timer. That's what helps me. 🤗

I know this may seem silly, but I’ve struggled with building organizing habits my whole life because of adhd and the guilt of not being able to maintain a constant routine, but recently I’ve made punch cards for myself to build those habits. For example I have a huge mental block “tidiness” that leads to me just putting something down when I’m finished with it, because of that I have a punch card now called “don’t put it down, put it away!” Then I drew 10 stars (because cleaning makes me a superstar) and gave myself a little reward for completing 10 times (like a sleep set, or my favorite chips)

I find this a really vulnerable & welcoming post, for myself, cleaning was taught to me by my parents, my siblings, literally every1 i know from childhood, cleaned & on schedule. Dishes vaccum laundry etc and every weekend, full bed strip for sheets pillows covers etc and dust, mop, all rooms & once a month, deep clean, so windows, lounge suite clean etc etc. But i have noticed that younger people havent been given the lessons of cleaning etc. But, weldone you for wanting to create healthier cleaning habits & schedule 🥰

I think what ppl don’t realize, is cleaning/tidying/ organizing IS taught. It’s a skill that is learned and shown through example. I don’t think we’re just expected to know how to do it. If you’re never shown something, you can’t expect to just naturally know how to do it. The great part is, you can start to learn how to hone a skill at any point in time. Practice and consistency makes “perfect” or at least manageable. There are some great apps, learning tools and routines to check out and find what works for you & your fam. You got this 💪

Well done! I have ADHD and I recommend "How to keep house while drowning" by KC Davis (when you need a hug) and "Sink Reflections" by Marla cillie (when you need tough love). The latter introduces the fly lady method which was kind of life changing for me even though her politics seem questionable.

while it feels a little old fashioned, the Fly Lady system realltly helped me setting up some good routines, so maybe that's worth looking into?

I also love the book “how to keep house while drowning,” made for neurodivergent folks. It has realistic tips for our brains.

The way I got into a good cleaning routine was by telling myself “just put 10 things where they belong” just 10…and once at 10 you can stop or continue

If you’re a Google Sheets gal, I created a super detailed spreadsheet that is meant to help keep track of cleaning (daily, weekly, monthly, etc!) I’d be happy to send it 💕
