I love raccoons and can tell you why they do this. They're not washing the food or their hands they're moistening their hands to get more information about what they're touching. Raccoons have more nerve endings in their little hands than you do anywhere on your body but they're protected by thick callouses on their hands. In order to soften these callouses and really feel something they may like they wet their hands along with the item. If it's something they like then they'll already have the information about it when they touch it. Isn't that neat? 🥰
