@builtbyblake5: Hydrostatic pressure explained 👍 Learn about what causes your basement to have leaks and bowed foundation walls 😬 #carpentry #concrete #basement #foundations
As an engineer this is a FANTASTIC visual for me to provide my clients on foundations and why negative drainage is so important. Thank you!

@dam :
You are missing a whole lot of information. No one uses key ways. They use rebar.

Don’t forget foundation waterproofing and dimple board to push water away. What makes no sense is we have to tie in the exterior weeping tile to the inside in Canada to our sump because we can’t leave the pump outside in winter so we invite water in the basement and pumps fail all the time

Knowing a little bit about this stuff is what makes it annoying for me to watch the folks in Lost make their raft with fresh palm tree trunks and dried vines. There are so many "forces" that we don't consider when we plan to build things. And usually the only way to discover them is to have shit fall apart 🥲

ICF solves all this…you’re welcome! Waterproof, then back fill with 3/4” clear. No static pressure and is 98% compaction without tamping. Have Baughman High Octane drainage pipe to an outdoor sump pit cause we don’t bring water inside just to bring it out.

So I was right? A slope would reduce the lateral pressure, but the water could make its way in through the key way if the drain tile is blocked? Did I get that right?

So in this scenario, would it be stupid to install a French drain around the foundation, because that seems like the proper solution, or is that a dumb idea?

So we've got to the part of the demonstration that describes my basement. I feel like we fight the water about every other year. This time we dug a trench, because the puddle of water was too close to the house and our concrete started popping up. It's been wild.
