Born in 1922 and groomed for the stage from childhood, Dorothy Dandridge ascended from a traveling song-and-dance act to become the quintessential 1950s Hollywood icon and the first Black woman to truly achieve "It Girl" status on a global scale. Her career was a breathtaking series of shattered glass ceilings, most notably when she became the first African American to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her electric performance in Carmen Jones (1954), an achievement so monumental it landed her as the first Black woman on the cover of Life magazine. Yet, while the world swooned over her "Black Marilyn Monroe" allure, she lived under the crushing weight of systemic cruelty; even as a world-class headliner filling seats in the most exclusive venues, she was often forced to enter hotels through service elevators and denied the right to stay in the very rooms she helped book. The most haunting testament to this era's paradox occurred in 1953 at the Last Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas, where management was so enraged by her dipping a single toe into the whites-only swimming pool that they ordered all 100,000 gallons of water drained and forced workers to scrub the entire surface with acid to "disinfect" it from her presence.
