My daughter doesn’t freak out, but she will absolutely hyperfixate on it. What time it is, where it is, how long it takes to get there, where it is, what time it is, where it is, how long it takes to get there, where it is… 😂

The possible melt down of now knowing far enough in advance is way better than the 10 meltdowns a day she will have in anticipation of the event. Especially if it’s something she wants to do.

I’m autistic and hate not having enough of a warning to get myself ready mentally for appointments etc but when I Do know an appointment is soon I’ll be so anxious over it I’ll make myself sick or won’t be able to sleep 😭 there is no winning

I feel so seen right now! I oscillate between telling them so they're not surprised and not telling them so they don't hyperfocus on it for hours on end😂😂😂

Yes! I tell her a few hours before so she’s aware time wise, but I also don’t want her ruminating on it.

I used to front load days ahead but as he got older I noticed it definitely created more anxiety. I decided one day while I was feeling exactly like this to just ask him what he thought would be more helpful and he said “don’t tell me until the day of or just take me there and bring my iPad and a special drink while I’m there and then can we get a treat after” I teared up, was so proud and took the biggest breath of relief. This boy had major expressive and receptive language delay and was in 5 therapies a week from 2-5 (down to 2 now) He’s made such huge progress. At 11 now, does he still have struggle areas, for sure and still has a hard time with appointments occasionally refusing to go or participate from time to time but the fact that he’s now trying to problem solve and advocating for himself feels like a pretty big deal! I often get stuck in strategy mindset that while often are helpful, as they grow and if regulated and if able to communicate maybe ask them what they think will help, prompting a couple options so they don’t get too overwhelmed, invite them into the conversation about stuff. It also helps by giving them autonomy, a better sense of control over the situation and shows that we care about their thoughts and feeling. I know everyones situation is different and I’m not assuming you haven’t already tried this but just in case it’s helpful I thought I’d add my experience. Good luck and hang in there momma, I see you! 💗

I can’t win one way or the other! Mine does better if he gets use to the idea of something instead of springing it on him, but then he’ll freak out about it when I remind him the day of. I’ve tried many mixed combinations. No winning ways yet.

I don’t tell her till the morning of the appointment, (she’s 15) I’ve learned that if I tell her anytime before then, she will lose sleep. It could be a routine dental appointment, she loves her dentist… but man if she knows the day before or a week before…

Man I have to tell mine like a week in advance and she has her own whiteboard calendar for all her activities and appointments. She gets so mad if I forget anything 😂

For me, it’s Three days. First day - Panic, realizing the appointment is real, mentally preparing for every outcome. Second day- calmer, still anxious but able to rationalize and think about past experiences with comfortability. Third day- the appointment, not long enough to start overthinking again, but long enough to have a breath and not be hooked on the “what-ifs.” However anything being made without me knowing is stressful, so maybe you should make the appointment with them so they know from the beginning

I'm the type of person that wants to know as soon as it's scheduled so I can process and adapt. Frustrates me when I don't have time to process it.

My dad and mum don’t tell me I have an appointment…until it’s time to go to the appointment. My dad does this with all my siblings and I even though half of us are adults, I remember one time he just got everyone up one day, told us to get ready and then took us all to the dentist, he doesn’t even give us the chance to panic or try to get out of it..

Wait is this a real thing? I am pending a dx and I have always done this. That appt date on the calendar would on my mind every day from the day I found out until it happened- no matter how far in advance

I have one ND kid who needs to rehearse and pre-plan everything. The other basically can’t have any warning lol. It’s a mess for family outings.

I have one that will freak out if I omit thet he's getting shots or bloodwork. I have to tell him everything I know so he is aware. I out off telling him until the day before or morning of. He asks me a million questions though "what's it for? Will I get shots?" One time ONCE, I didnt think he was going to get any but he needed 1. It was a betrayal of the highest degree.
