“The brothers’ deception was calculated” A pedophile who pretended he was severely disabled for several years to avoid standing trial for child sex offences was caught out when police captured him on CCTV strutting around a pub during an Elvis Presley night out. John Siddell, 41, pretended he couldn’t walk or talk and was often incapacitated during court-ordered appointments - a plot aided by his older brother James Siddell, 44, who even suggested to psychiatrists that John was unfit for trial. John sexually abused three children, who were under 14, between 2018 and 2021, while he was living in Leicestershire. The brothers carried on the ruse for four years, before PC Matt Gibson became suspicious following an encounter with the brothers in April 2024. Working with the Crown Prosecution Service, police began gathering further evidence, including CCTV, and captured John walking, talking and socialising. In September last year, both men admitted perverting the course of justice. James was jailed for two years and nine months. John was jailed for three years and two months on that charge and a further 11 years and 10 months for 15 child sex offences. He was also put on a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for 20 years. DC Gibson said: "This case shows the lengths some offenders will go to avoid justice.
