I am a chef at a school and honestly the school dinners are lovely! For instance today we have fresh butchers sausages roast potatoes and brocolli carrots and sweetcorn with chocolate cake and chocolate custard for pudding and if they don’t like that there’s always tomato Pasta and jacket potato’s everyday 🥰

I’m not even telling my daughter that packed lunch is an option, going full fledge on the school dinners in hopes she will surprise me (another fussy eater)! The school usually has a menu on their website, ours is really good and lots of there she likes/eats at home. I may introduce a packed lunch once a week if all goes well as a treat! Save the £ if we can as school dinners are free in reception 🥰

I’m a reception teacher and at my school you can decide day by day if you’d like a packed lunch or hot lunch for your child. I’ve also had children before bring in a packed lunch but pick a hot lunch to try and if they don’t like it, they still have the packed lunch. Have a chat with Amalie’s teacher before she starts 🙂

Both mine hate school dinners, Elliott has them now in secondary but Charlie's still on them, however has the same thing most days. Yoghurt, snack, fruit, crisps and either sandwich, sausage roll or pasta xx

Keys stage 1 get free school dinners. Wednesday is always roast day, fish on a Friday. We have all different things sausage mash and peas, pasta, pizza, curry, toad in the whole taco wraps. Also offer jacket potato or a sandwich. You can pick via an app

My daughter starts school too but she’s goes nursery so used to lunches there already. I do a mix of packed lunch. Sometimes a sandwich or more of a picky plate with cheese and crackers. I’ll do some sort of fruit and cucumber. Then I’ll add like rice cakes or if I have something I’ve made like a fruity muffin I’ll put that in. She also requested pasta a couple of times. She’ll eat most of it. Might see if she’ll like a hot dinner occasionally x

My daughter goes to school nursery and was fine with her school dinner until they changed the menu this term. Lots of vegan dishes which she doesn’t eat and she was coming home upset because she was so hungry from not eating. Trialed her on packed lunch this week and she is gets excited about her dinner now xx

I find school dinners hit and miss but there is always a sandwich, fruit or jacket potato option. School dinners are free till they are in year 2 I think so I'm refusing to make packed lunches till I have to pay 🤣

They are lovely, but I would say as a teacher of 9 years but also a mum to a pretty fussy 4 year old (&18month old) they aren’t exactly great for fussy eaters as the main options are pretty out there such as -beef chilli tacos/ mince beef and dumplings etc…however I say even fussy kids eat because all their friends are…xxx

she might eat school dinners better when all her friends have them. i'd double check with the school but ours dont allow pack lunches in keystage 1. and they also get free school meals

Our school website has this years menu on it which is 3 week rotation. Looks good with jacket potatoes available every day aswell as the meals incase they don’t like the meal. My little boy doesn’t start till sep though xxx

School dinners are hit and miss, but always have jacket potatoes as an option! My daughter is year 2, we get a menu for a certain period! But our school do stuff like Greek chicken, but then will also do a roast and pasta for example x

My Son told me he ate a cheese burger at school and moved it (he’s 3) I was like wow ok I’ll make it at home …. Anyway he meant he likes the bun, not the filling 🤣 he’s like mommy I took all the meat and salad out and that goes in the bin 😭

My daughter lives for her snacks and will eat hot meals but I do think she’ll struggle with not liking school meals. So think I’m going to keep her packed lunch’s to start with. Not ready for her to go full time. Going to prep her through six weeks and change out the sweet stuff

I would go for the school dinners. No worry about dairy items sat in a lunchbox. Many try different things without you there and its a great social skill. No shopping, preparing or washing up a dirty lunchbox
