So is a mix of top soil and compost best? When I watered my new seeds they are still wet the next day. Will they still germinate?

Im spending more time digging contaminated top soil out and old plant material with trash. Luckily I had decided on a container garden for the veggies and flowers outside of the pots. And plants to help amend the dirt after like Sunflowers 🌻.

My fist year gardening, I got my hands on some goat manure. I wanted to try growing watermelon for the first time so I just used a huge grow bag and filled it up with nothing but the goat manure. I grew 2 watermelon plants in that grow bag and they were the best tasting watermelon we’ve had in a while.

And don’t forget to check to see if your area gives away free compost and topsoil! I was shocked to find my township did this. Saves you lots of money if you have access to this.

I’ve been sort of combining them as the topsoil quality in my patio garden didn’t seem the best so I’ve been mixing it with added material like the others so hopefully it’s not a lost cause

Is there sense in amending with pumice, perlite, or sand for moisture sensitive plants like roses if they're to be put in clay soil? I'm more familiar w mixing soil for houseplants

I did a mixed composition of mediums to start my beds last year. This year I tilled in some compost to refresh the top layer. Now my beds keep going hydrophobic :( its a mixture of soil conditioner, top soil, compost and perlite. its annoying.

I learned the hard way that you shouldn't fill a bed with 100% compost. First two years were great and then after that there was almost no water retention- it was awful

I live in a big clay area and have started to mixing in compost to my in ground garden. The clay suffocates everything if you don’t till it just right. My bushes are thriving since I started putting in the effort.

For anyone wanting to see what kind of topsoil they have, get a tall jar and fill it partway with dirt from the ground, then the rest with water. Shake well and let sit until it settles, the particles will settle in nice layers letting you see the contents of your topsoil. This is also a great experiment for kids
