this doesn't explain how it can synthesize images that have never seen before. I'm pretty sure a space satellite donkey with feather wings was not in the training data.

It wasn't too long ago that this kind of thing was basically the realm of science fiction. One day, AI might not need training data but can collect samples on its own, then things will really take off.
