I understood why I was there. I watched on TV as people threw themselves from the towers. From that day forward, I knew where my path in life was going to lead me. For most new and young Infantryman, they don't think about the toll it will take on you. It will change who you are forever. You will pay a price whether you experience combat or not, just the high tempo environment, coupled with stress, sleep deprivation, lack of family time, and a mission first mentality. Looking back, I don't know if I'd do it all again. I tell people I would, but I also tell them the affect it has had on me. You don't see it happening. It happens slowly over time. You really only notice when you're with people who haven't been through what you have. You feel out of place, incapable of interacting with

I'm not looking for pity or handouts, I'm just here for awareness and that all you veterans out there who are out of the service or still serving, you are not alone. Keep in contact with those you've served with, reach out and just have a conversation sometime. It helps to just talk to those who understand. There have been several times where I've been called by guys i haven't talked to in years. They were struggling and just needed someone to talk with that understands.
