Probably an unpopular opinion, but if you make that an extreme part of your company culture, you 100% need to bring that up in an interview to potential employees. That isn’t a “normal“ interview question that would be asked by a potential higher. Because I would’ve said thank you for your time, bye.

I'm a devout Christ follower. I would be taken aback if this was sprung on me at work. This needs to be mentioned in the interviewing process and employee handbook.

The practice isn’t the problem— but not putting it in the job description or handbook, not bringing it up during the hiring process, and then firing someone for not participating is a HUGE problem and in some cases might be grounds to sue.

I was a receptionist and they also wanted me to do social media which was my goal to move to. In my review they said i had to do it on my own time and I said no. And they brought up a project I was doing outside of work (didn’t sign any nda stating I was not allowed to work outside of work hours) and was attacked about it. Wasn’t constructive criticism just getting attacked to the point I left that meeting crying

Ummmm, what? Kind of an important detail to mention during the interview. “By the way, we chant to an invisible sky wizard before meetings because we think it brings us good luck, you down for that?” Hard pass but thanks for the interview.

Something like that should have been disclosed in the interview process.

The company should be upfront about this during interviews. While prayer may be part of its culture, employees’ comfort must be respected. As long as they follow the rules and perform at 100%, there should be no issue.

That’s a lawsuit, isn’t it? That’s an important cultural fact that was not disclosed so that being the reason for the dismissal seems like asking for a lawsuit.

I think my only critique would be they should have brought this up with their manager ahead of time rather than protest in front of everyone

I completely understand the feeling. I’m a member of the local Realtor Association (small town NC) and a prayer is said at every luncheon. I’m not religious and it makes me feel so awkward. I do not participate in the prayer and honestly it’s the only thing that kept me from seeking a position on the board.
