The first time I noticed it, I thought I was just being paranoid. Our bedroom window faces the house next door, and his blinds are always shut. Always. Day, night, whatever. But around 12:17 a.m., every night, his bedroom light flicks on. No footsteps, no door, no car in the driveway. Just dark, then light. I checked his work schedule once when he left it stuck in his screen door. Night shifts. He is not even home when that light comes on. I started timing it. 12:17, 12:16, 12:18. Never more than a couple minutes off. The weird part is it only happens if I am awake. If I fall asleep on the couch or stay at a friend’s house, my mom says his house stays dark all night. But if I’m in my room, scrolling with the lights off, his light flicks on like it is answering mine. One night I got brave and sat in the dark with my phone brightness all the way down. 12:15. 12:16. The hallway clock ticked so loud. At 12:17 exactly, the light snapped on and his blinds shifted, like someone was standing right behind them. Last week, I decided to record it. I set up my phone in the window and hit record at 12:10. At 12:17, the light came on like usual. The blinds bent, like fingers pushing them open. I froze. Then my phone buzzed in my hand and I nearly dropped it. Unknown number: “Go to bed. You do not look good in this light.”I checked the video after. The light never turns on.
