@louhibbert: Everyone’s grief is very very real, but I think there is an important line that should be respected when it comes to comparing grief. As good intention as people may have, sometimes it can be really really minimising if you compare certain griefs to ones that are very traumatic and simply a tragedy. Sending love to EVERYONE who has lost someone❤️
Worse when people compare it to losing a pet drives me crazy

a big part of losing a parent at a young age is that they miss out on so much

Exactly. All grief is sad, but some is tragic.

sure the feeling or magnitude of grief felt might be similar, but the impact on and trajectory of your life after losing a parent young, and the feeling of grief you carry the remainder of your life IS different to losing one when ur older

Lost my dad at 17 and had to do CPR on him. Lost my grandad in his 90s when he was ready to go and passed peacefully with family. Absolutely no comparison

You expect your grandparents to pass away in the early chapters of your life. You don’t expect your parents to. It’s such a lonely grief, because you have to navigate life alone when you’re just starting out. You have to grieve the fact they won’t be at your graduation, wedding, see your children. You have to see others around you happy with both parents when your life has changed forever. Thank you for sharing this❤️

Losing a parent as a child changes your brain! it gives you PTSD, increases your mental health risk and activates long-time stress! it is unfortunately not the same! sending you love x

Loss is loss. But I’m sorry losing your dad when you are in your 50/60 or older isn’t the same as losing your dad at 13. you had DECADES I had 13 years it isn’t the same

You don’t know the circumstances behind someone’s loss. A grandparent may just be a grandparent to one person, but to another they may have been the person who raised them or their closest / only family member.
You can’t compare grief based on the title of the relationship. The impact of losing a grandparent, parent, pet, friend, or anyone else depends on the bond that person had with them

i lost my grandparents when I was 19 and my dad when I was 20. I could never compare loosing my grandparents and my dad. Loosing my grandparents felt like another stage of life, but loosing my dad felt like loosing a part of myself

Losing your parents at a young age means that they will not be there to share the best moments of our lives. I think it's the hardest thing to cash in.

My mum explained it to me by saying one is a tragedy and one isn’t, and that makes sense to me, I was so upset when my grandad died at 95 but my Dad died at 45 and that was tragic 🥹

It’s not about comparing one another’s grief. But losing a parent or guardian at a young age alters the way our brains work for the rest of our lives. We grow up without that part of us, & yes losing a parent or grandparent at 95 when your 60 is traumatic and you will have grief, however, you also had that person grow up with you and they were able to experience life with you. Those of us that lost a parent at a young age will forever go through life only wishing that they were here to experience it with us. So no we aren’t comparing grief and saying that one is worse than the other but we have had to live and grow up with the grief because for a lot of us, we have had to live with grief for longer than we got to live with them 🤍
