@dr.starkid: Replying to @Rory when I say “stack your resume” I’m talking about making strategic and intentional moves that may not have immediate reward but set you up for future success #phd #academia #mindset
Where do y'all find these magical mentors that are just hanging around in colleges apparently. Everybody I know apparently has a mentor

I still have no idea where to go...or rather which direction to head and I'm 27. I have ideas of where I'd like to end up but no clear idea

I recently got accepted into Grad school for Biology and I’d definitely say getting in contact with professors and doing research helped me a lot. I didn’t have the grades but I started out volunteering and that led to me doing paid research over the summer. So not only did I get recommendations and experience, I also made a little money in the process lol.

What was doing undergrad research like? I might be doing some research next year and I have no idea how to prepare for it…

Fantastic advice! In the corporate world I’d advise people to *learn* what jobs exist at the leadership levels of a domain or industry. I find it’s often difficult to even know what someone could grow their career into without trying to learn how orgs structure themselves, how decisions get made etc.

This is good stuff. A lot of students I work with have a difficult time thinking ahead like this. Thank you for sharing.

Bro... this is such good advice!! I truly was/am a late bloomer. I didn't start rolling with the strategic mindset until mid-30s. Now, my entire decision-making framework in work and life is about strategy, building relationships and leveraging collective wisdom. You gotta know what you want.

Even a community college student can get these summer internships. I did one at the Brookhaven National Laboratory and it was specifically for community college students of science. :)

How did you know you needed to do these things? Like knowing outside research/recs were important? I'm assuming you didn't just Google it.

Genuinely useful advice king. 1 2 3. Build connections in and out of school. Think in advance of where you wanna be.
