@watchfulcoyote: You wouldnt enter someone’s home uninvited- why are we taught it’s ok to do the same to people’s homelands? Travel for people who love you is the only ethical way to travel at all. #travel #world #fun #healthecycle #foryoupage
i very fiercly disagree with what you said about cities. i moved out to the country when i was 10 and I've been trying to get back to the city every since, if you live in a nice bit of countryside i get it. but my end of the woods is just flat farmlands and right wing nutjob old people. and you can't get anywhere without a car and there are no jobs.
cities are where life actually happens

Well this is certainly a bold take, but I honestly think it’s one of the most preposterous ones I’ve heard from you.
First, it’s a massive leap to take your own lonely or uncomfortable travel experiences and turn them into a moral rule for all white people. Speak for yourself. You don’t get to universalize your personal guilt or alienation into a doctrine for everyone else.
Second, do you realize how important tourism is to many places around the world? Entire communities depend on it economically. Framing travel itself as some kind of inherently exploitative act unless you receive a personal invitation is detached from reality.
Also, your argument leans heavily on extreme examples and historical guilt while ignoring the ordinary reality that millions of people from every background travel, interact, spend money, learn, and coexist peacefully every day.
Finally, there’s something oddly self congratulatory running through this whole worldview. You seem very invested in presenting yourself as one of the “good” enlightened white people who understands the indigenous perspective better than everyone else. It starts drifting into self flagellation rather than genuine humility.
Travel is not automatically colonialism. Most people are just curious about the world, and that’s a normal human impulse

so you're saying there's absoloutley no way to travel non-invited to any other country or even just outside the general area you were born in without causing harm? (genuine question)

I am curious- if you’re watching this from outside the US, is it glitchy? If you’re watching from within the US, is it glitchy? This is just me being nosy…

I don't travel to places with expectations or ideas of what I want them to be. The world is what it is and I'd like to experience a good chunk of it while I can, while prioritizing kindness and respect.

I can relate so much with what your saying. I'm a white european, when I went to bali I felt like an intruder, like a sore thumb. I didn't know the language or anything about the island. I had some nice interactions, but it was still not great.
few years later I went to Califonia to some woman in the desert who i found on workaway and stayed with her for three weeks. I was really part of the community, people know me, it was great. I lived their life.
now when I travel, I always want to go through workaway, because there im invited by someone and will not be an intruder.
the only thing I disagree with is the food. I understand your point, but will not eat animals. I'd rather not travel than do that

Insane take. A person in a 99% homogeneous place with no foreign friends would never be able to travel. They would never experience other cultures and it would only make them less connected to the world around them.

it's great advice, but can I just say that American, British & Ozzy tourists are on another level than most tourists from other countries? 😬
I'm always very happy when the places I travel to are not swarmed with American tourists.
also "fermented" is not "rotten" 😝

hi, I enjoy your content a lot and I enjoyed this video as well (as I will future vids I'm sure). however, I wanted to enquire about the part where you said "white people are awful at travelling"...do u have experience with European tourists? do you really think it's the same ?

I agree broadly that the benefits of cities only come into effect if you actually live there. Rome is fantastic though. That being said, I’d rather sit on my couch than line up for overhyped gelato.

I very much agree that not eating what you are offered is very rude, but i dont quite agree that the same holds for asking what the food is. I find new foods very interesting and knowning what the main ingredients expands that experience. I feel that asking about something presented to me shows that I appreciate the experience and am interested in that persons offering. My view is obviously assuming that the question is from a well meaning and respectful standpoint and your critisism may not apply in this case, but I wanted to ask for clarification as obviously I have things to learn and consider, which I may have not yet.

Most of what you say makes perfect sense to me here except the bit about cities which doesn't resonate.
I'm from the middle of nowhere and the first time I stepped foot in a city of over 200,000 was when I was 17.
I've always found being in big cities to be exciting and thrilling. I go to big cities on vacation(mostly in my own country, but sometimes in America or Europe) and always feel so energized by kind of just wandering around not looking for anything in particular and taking it all in.

This video made me consider a lot of things that I have never before. I leave tomorrow for Japan for 2 months. Throughout middle and high school I studied Japanese and practiced cultural activities with my tutor who was born in Japan and still connected to it. She did not “invite” me to Japan since she doesn’t live there, but she has encouraged me to go, and made sure I was aware of certain etiquette before I embark. During my trip, I plan to do the big cities like Tokyo and Osaka, but I will also be doing a cultural work exchange where I am invited to live and work in a Japanese person’s home. What is your stance on the trip I am about to do, and do you have any advice for traveling the country ethically?

As a native Maine-r - I can’t afford to move back because of how expensive it’s become to live there in part bc of the travel culture. Others are of course far more impacted than me and I also traveled places without thinking of the space being disrupted by me when I was younger. This video is seriously important.
