@tripimprover: I can totally imagine that people's fantasies in the past ran wild when trying to explain how the plague could have such a devastating impact on a region. Arnold Bocklin captured it in 1898 by a female-looking figure riding on a bizarre creature, and in 1927 Frederick Simpson Coburn decided on a black-hooded figure with large bat wings riding a horse-like animal, spreading the plague through the village.
