@charlesmcbryde: The Middle Class doesn't exist. It was a construct created by the Owning Class to convince the Working Class that economic mobility between classes was not only possible, but common. In her book 'Virtue Hoarders: Against the Professional Managerial Class,' the author Catherine Liu describes the function of the 'Middle Class' as being the enforcement of elite class priorities. The Middle Class, then, is not a stepping stone on the way to ever higher economic mobility, but the gatekeepers assigned from keeping the restive Working Class from engaging in class warfare. Members of the PMC often mistake the priorities of their elite benefactors for their own priorities, resulting in them acting as enforcers for elite visions of social and economic relations, rather than standing up for their own class interests. We have the PMC to thank for the the fact that the average American imagines themselves to be a future billionaire rather than a present worker. Until comfortable, middle class people fully internalize that they are closer to being homeless than joining the 1%, they will see the working class as their enemy, rather than their strongest ally.
