I think you could also opt out completely or partially. Like maybe you had a phone number but no address. Or instead of your full first name it’s just an initial etc

phone books only had the name of the person who had the account so if you are looking for a friends number you have to know their parent or whoever they lived with name

also, it was the grownups that were listed, so you couldn't really find your friends as a teen, you had to know their parents name
