Bui Doi was not just for viets mixed with white babe. It referred to children who were abandoned to the streets, and all children who were born to US soilders— not all of those soilders who abandoned children were white.

Hey, Viet here. Bui Doi isn’t about whiteness. It’s specifically children who are mixed (any) with Vietnamese and American abandoned after the war. Today, in the mainland and diaspora its more commonly used to refer to orphans unless you’re specifically talking to about those born during the Vietnam War and then subsequently abandoned. I wouldn’t use it unless your dad was an American GI in Vietnam and you were born in Vietnam.

I made a semi joking story on Instagram about how I now identify as “nothing” because of this discourse. Your energy was so positive and uplifting at the gathering!!

The term includes Vietnamese children from any American soldier. My cousins were born in Vietnam and are African American and Viet.

Organising a public "wasian" event is indeed problematic and excludes other mixed Asians. But people using the term "wasian" to describe themself when they have both white and Asian ancestry is not an issue at all and doesn't center whiteness.

Not all “wasians” are white presenting especially if the Asian in you is Southeast Asian. People need to get out of their feels about how other people want to express their identity or experience. I’m sick of this narrative being pushed like “wasians” are the cause of anti-blackness or exclusion within the Asian community at large. We should talk a lot more about the colorism within the Asian community. And also someone’s expression of their unique racial experience of literally not fitting anywhere doesn’t take away anything from anyone else’s experience. It’s okay to let someone else be seen and not imbue bad intent.

As a wasian myself, both of my parents are wasian: mom more Asian than dad, dad more white than mom, me 59% Asian/ 41% white. This conversation is exhausting- I never fit in with Asians or white people, I found comfort with POC, personally growing up in LA, and Houston, and I always felt like I didn’t belong. I find no reason for the wasian hate- we are building a community around people who share similar experiences. It’s not about supremacy in the slightest. The intention is always to create connection, and people are getting it twisted for no reason. It’s like telling someone with blonde hair that they can’t go to a meeting of blonde people bc it’s leaving out brunette people. Come on now people.

Words and labels matter but they only have the power to hurt or stigmatize if ppl allow them to. We live in a very culturally diverse community (40/40% White/Asian) with a lot of Wasians. My kids feel no stigma
