There is zero convolution here. The sky bison and other animals still were original benders, but the lion turtles were the ones who unlocked and gave the ability to people. Just because the lion turtles were the ones who gave the ability, people could still learn bending from the original masters, the animals

There's a few people in this comment section that are chased by knowledge but still manage to get away from it somehow. The convergence was bound to happen 10,000 years from that moment. Any Avatar in charge, no matter whether Korra, Aang, Pavi, Roku, Kyoshi, Yangcheng or Kuruk, they all would eventually fight against Vastus after restoring the bridge between the two worlds.
