Under the command of Sultan Mehmed II #MehmedII, the Ottoman army wanted to bypass the strong chain defense blocking the entrance to the Golden Horn. The #Byzantines had stretched a massive chain across the water to stop Ottoman ships from entering the harbor. To overcome this, Mehmed II ordered an incredible engineering feat: Ottoman soldiers dragged around 70 ships over land using wooden logs, greased tracks, and manpower. The ships were pulled from the Bosphorus, across the hills of Pera, and then launched into the Golden Horn from the other side. This surprise move allowed the Ottomans to attack Constantinople from multiple directions, weakening the city’s defenses and speeding up its fall. It is remembered as one of the most brilliant military strategies in history, showing creativity, engineering skill, and strong leadership.
