Fun fact, the reason you need four rather than three satellites (triangulation) is that your phone also needs to figure out how far out of sync it is with the satellites’ time. So it is really 4-angulating you in spacetime :)

Phones rarely use GPS like this as it’s too slow - GPS has very little bandwidth and the signal is very weak. More often they use “Assisted” GPS when they have an internet connection, this uses a database of known WiFi and cell tower points to speed things up.
