@pagingdrfran: if you are going for any surgery, you should be fully informed about what body parts are being operated on and removed. “a tubal” can be several different types of procedures, and it’s important you know the difference between them! #tubal #sterilization #bilateralsalpingectomy

I wish they had done a salpingectomy as my understanding is that it significantly reduces the risk of ovarian cancer.

a tubal ligation is supposed to be PERMANENT STERILIZATION. theyre not always reversible. they're not meant to be.

I know IVF is expensive, inconvenient, and a lot of extra steps. But as someone who did IVF due to tubal infertility, I’ll never understand why “natural” is what people get hung up on. I have never been sad about how my daughter was made.

I’m confused, they’re both permanent procedures? One just has the added bonus of reducing cancer risks.

I think a huge part of this issue is that social media has started exaggerating how reversible tubal ligations and vasectomies are to the point where some people no longer acknowledge that these are considered permanent sterilization. In an effort to make these procedures more accessible (which they should be!!!) and less scary, we’ve accidentally created a situation which may result in more counseling being necessary. Not because people don’t know their own minds but because the false information out there can make people choose something that doesn’t actually fit their needs.

I had a salpingectomy immediately after my 3rd. I had to sign a consent form to have it done around 26 weeks where my Dr went over everything including feelings of regret and told me multiple times that I could change my mind if I wanted to. They had me sign another consent form when I went in for my induction and went over everything again. A few hours before I had it done I had both the anesthesiologist and the surgeon go over everything again and was asked multiple times if I was sure. I'm 4 months postpartum and definitely feel a little bit of regret but then I look at my 4 month old smiling and making sounds and I'm like wow I could have 10 more of you and that reminds me that that's exactly why I opted for a permanent option 🤣

Tubal reanastamosis is also expensive and not covered by insurance and is less successful than IVF

Idk, I can understand feeling bad she's going through a tough realization, but ALL tubal ligations are considered sterilization. The success of reversal is not guaranteed. You're supposed to treat it as a permanent procedure even if you just had them cut or clipped. Some forms have a high success rate, but still carry the very likely risk that you won't get pregnant. There's lots of short term and long term non surgical options. Vasectomies also aren't a guaranteed reversal. Social media needs to stop acting like these are temporary procedures alternative to birth control that can be stopped.

They can still do IVF. There was never any guarantee a tubal was reversible anyway.

The good news is they can do IVF. I know it’s expensive but it is an avenue.

it also seems like potential for regret is used as a reason to limit or remove options. PEOPLE HAVE THE RIGHT TO MAKE DECISIONS THEY MIGHT REGRET

it's a lot harder to measure how many people decided *not* to get a tubal and then regretted it. which certainly skews people's perception of that risk.

Every single surgery/procedure I have ever had I have had to tell nurses, surgeon, doctor, anesthesiologist, etc. exactly what I was having done in my own words and asked if I understood what it all meant. I was also told they would do their best to stick to the original plan but if something came up in the process they may need to modify the procedure and detailed that also and asked if I understood.

I'm pretty sure you have to sign paperwork saying that you know what procedure you're getting. I got a bilateral sapingectomy, it's literally all in the paperwork.

the idea that these things are reversible like the ctrl z and not like human beings are messy and may or may not work depending on what we needed to do. we need to be more real about what reversible means and how much of your decision is based on this word.
