I'm an ex Muslim and almost all my cousins from the mothers side got religious education and most around my age has memorized the Quran my mom wanted me to do that too but my dad didn't let her saying it should be my decision but my mom still made me go to courses to learn how to read it in the summers so yeah this was my experience

I used to be forced to go to quran school every other day. I have bad memory and I was made to restart the book many times to the point I couldn’t take it anymore and deliberately refused to go until my parents stopped making me go to it.
