“If they’re not doing anything to give him money, why should he care about them” because they could do something to make him money. If they starve to death, then they become useless and he loses out on any potential profit from them. If his goal is profit, it’s in his best interest for them not to starve and work for him. Well fed, happy workers are the most productive workers, so if he cares about profit, it’s in his best interest for them to be well fed and happy. The reason why we have so many “basic needs” is from capitalism making those basic needs profitable for people to have. If we abandon capitalism (or at the least switch to communism) then we lose the reason we have so much access to those basic needs
