@sydneymclark: It’s been 2 months since I adopted the sweetest, most loving girl, Milkshake, and it’s been such an emotional journey so far. We’ve already been to the vet 5+ times and still feel like we’re searching for answers. She scratches around her eyes and ears until the skin becomes raw, overgrooms and bites at herself, and frequently shakes her head. The only thing that seems to give her noticeable relief so far has been steroids. I’m trying to stay hopeful because all I want is for her to be comfortable and have the happy, healthy life she deserves. Has anyone experienced anything similar with their cat — whether allergies, dermatitis, food sensitivities, or chronic itching? I’d really appreciate hearing any advice, experiences, or things that helped your kitty. #atopicdermatitis #catallergies #overgrooming #itchycat #cathelp

My baby did this cause she was having environmental allergies! It also could be stress/feline OCD. I would talk to your vet about allergy shots or anxiety medication!

Silly question, but do you use air fresheners in your home like diffusers, wall plug ins etc? Cats are and can be really sensitive to those. Probably not the case here, but doesn’t hurt to check.

I know it’s expensive, but it may be time for a dermatology consult. They’re able to do allergy testing and find out what she’s allergic to, then do targeted allergy immunotherapy (basically a specialized vaccine). It’s safer than doing steroids long term.

My cat has allergies and was doing something similar. We got an allergy panel to determine if it was food or environmental. I highly recommend. She’s on a light dose of a steroid and it’s helping her tremendously.

U need to stop using fabric softener and other fragrances. Dont wash her beds with a softener or your clothes. Also use a fragrance free laundry detergent.

You said you were in a brand new apartment complex ? Did you just move into recently, if so maybe she’s anxious about that ? 😓

My cat does this but not as bad as your sweet baby 🥺 the vet told me they’re ‘excessively grooming’ which is a sign of stress/anxiety. I had to get (believe it or not) a cat anxiety diffuser that I put on whenever I leave the house. They also said it can be a sign that their teeth / eyes are having issues depending on where they are scratching. My baby also had an eye ulcer from a dog attack before I got him! Once we gave him the right meds, he did it far less. Still does it but they said he always will

My cat did this before. It was anxiety. He was anxious because I was anxious. Long story short my cat gets sick whenever I’m not in a good place mentally 😅

if you've been to the same vet 5 times and didn't get an answer, maybe you should try a new vet

There is a plug in device that may help if she is anxiously scratching, although im not sure what it is called, I think it emits a pheromone or scent that calms cats.
